One of the most important theater experiences I’ve ever had was seeing The Dark Knight. Now, I know I’m not alone in this, but I was a 13-year-old boy when this Batman action-thriller dropped. And it was in IMAX. Give me a break.
I had obsessed over movies before—Space Jam, various Disney animated fare, Pirates of the Caribbean—but The Dark Knight really did a number on me. Rewatching Nolan’s genre-busting film now, I can see some flaws but am still mesmerized by the first hour, the balls-to-the-wall filmmaking and (of course) Heath Ledger. It’s great stuff.
Most of Nolan’s movies are, and after Oppenheimer, I asked Ben and Jake to join me to rank our personal top fives from the esteemed director. Well, we also asked Matt, but he had flooding problems, so he provided us with our list and dealt with that (probably) more important thing.
